Most Used Social Media in Malaysia: 2026 Platform Rankings

Key Takeaways

WhatsApp is the most used platform in Malaysia by self-reported monthly use, but TikTok has the largest advertising audience, reaching 30.7 million adults in late 2025 according to DataReportal. YouTube (23.6 million) and Facebook (23.0 million) follow. At MYSense, we read these as reachable accounts rather than a headcount of people.

  • WhatsApp leads monthly use, but it sells through conversations, not feeds.
  • TikTok’s ad audience equals 86.8% of Malaysia’s internet users.
  • Facebook still reaches 86.4% of Malaysian adults, with a male-leaning audience.
  • Instagram added 1.1 million users in a year and skews female.
  • Choose platforms by audience and goal, not by the biggest user number.

Working out the most used social media in Malaysia sounds simple until you notice that every report gives a different order. The answer changes depending on whether you count messaging apps, and whether you trust surveys or the platforms’ own ad tools. This guide ranks the platforms using the 2026 figures and explains what each one is actually good for.

For scale, DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Malaysia report counted 30.7 million social media user identities in October 2025, equal to 85.0% of the population, while 98.0% of Malaysians were online.

Which Social Media Is Most Used in Malaysia?

It depends on how you measure it. By self-reported monthly use, WhatsApp ranks first and Facebook second among Malaysian internet users aged 16 to 64, according to GWI survey data published via DataReportal. By advertising reach, TikTok leads with 30.7 million adult users, ahead of YouTube and Facebook. Both lists matter, because they answer different questions.

How Are Social Media Users in Malaysia Counted?

Mostly through the platforms’ own advertising tools, which report how many accounts an advertiser can reach. That is not the same as unique people. One person may run several accounts, and platforms regularly revise or clean their figures, so a jump or drop in a single year can reflect counting changes rather than real behaviour.

Two quirks are worth knowing before you quote any of these numbers. TikTok’s adult ad reach equals 114.8% of Malaysians aged 18 and over, which is impossible as a headcount. DataReportal also notes that its national total for social media users can end up mirroring the largest single platform, which is why the national figure and TikTok’s both read 30.7 million.

What Are the Top Social Media Platforms in Malaysia, Ranked?

Taking survey and ad-reach data together, the leading platforms in Malaysia in 2026 are WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, followed by LinkedIn and a long tail of smaller networks. Below is what each one offers a marketer, in rough order of reach, with Xiaohongshu added for brands targeting Chinese-speaking Malaysians.

1. WhatsApp: the everyday default

WhatsApp sits outside DataReportal’s ad-reach ranking, yet GWI’s survey puts it first for monthly use among Malaysian internet users. For brands it is a conversion channel rather than a broadcast one, handling enquiries, bookings, catalogues and follow-ups. Facebook and Instagram ads can send people straight into a WhatsApp chat, which is often where the sale actually closes.

2. TikTok: the largest ad audience

TikTok reached 30.7 million users aged 18 and over in late 2025, equal to 86.8% of Malaysia’s internet users, and its ad audience grew by 2.1 million over the year. It skews slightly female, at 51.7%. For most consumer brands, TikTok Malaysia is now the main channel for discovery, with TikTok Shop turning videos into checkouts. The MYSense TikTok marketing team builds campaigns around that path.

3. YouTube: search-led video

YouTube’s ad audience stood at 23.6 million in late 2025, or 65.4% of the population. Google’s figures show that audience shrinking by 6.0% over the year, though DataReportal warns that falls like this often reflect data corrections rather than people leaving. YouTube earns its place for longer explainers, product demos and viewing that starts with a search.

4. Facebook: the broadest adult reach

Facebook reached 23.0 million users and 86.4% of Malaysian adults, the widest adult coverage of any network here. Its adult ad audience leans male, at 55.2%, and in our experience it skews older than TikTok or Instagram. It remains the workhorse for lead generation, community groups and Marketplace, and it shares one ad system with Instagram and WhatsApp.

5. Instagram: visual brands and Reels

Instagram’s ad audience reached 16.1 million, or 58.4% of adults, after adding 1.1 million users (+7.3%) in a year. It is the only major network in this list with a clear female lead, at 53.2% of its adult audience. In MYSense’s experience, lifestyle, beauty, F&B and retail brands see their strongest engagement here, particularly through Reels.

6. LinkedIn: the B2B channel

LinkedIn reports 10.0 million registered members in Malaysia, or 37.4% of adults. That is a member count rather than active users, so it is not directly comparable with the figures above. It is still the clearest route to decision-makers in B2B, recruitment and professional services, and its audience grew 13.6% over the year.

7. Messenger, X, Reddit and Threads: the long tail

Below LinkedIn the numbers drop sharply. Messenger reached 9.6 million in late 2025, X 4.81 million, Reddit 4.30 million and Threads 3.60 million. Reddit’s reach more than tripled in a year, a jump DataReportal treats with caution. For most Malaysian brands these suit niche communities and social listening better than a core budget.

8. Xiaohongshu: the Chinese-language wildcard

Xiaohongshu, also called RED, does not appear in DataReportal’s Malaysia rankings, so there is no reliable public user figure to quote. It still matters for brands targeting Chinese-speaking Malaysians, many of whom use it to research beauty, food and travel before buying. Treat it as a targeted channel; our Xiaohongshu marketing service covers how brands test it.

Which Platforms Do Malaysian Brands Actually Spend On?

Audience size and budget share rarely line up. In the Malaysian market, most brands still put the bulk of their paid social budget into Meta, because one ad system covers Facebook, Instagram and chats that open in WhatsApp. Consumer brands are shifting steadily more into TikTok, while LinkedIn and Xiaohongshu usually get smaller, targeted budgets.

The reasons are practical rather than about reach. Meta’s lead forms and click-to-WhatsApp ads suit how many Malaysians prefer to buy, through a chat with a real person. TikTok, by contrast, rewards brands that can produce fresh video every week, so where a brand lands often depends more on its creative capacity than on which platform has the biggest audience.

If you want to see how your own platform mix compares, the MYSense social media marketing Malaysia team can review it against both the public data and what we see across client accounts.

How Should You Choose Which Social Media Platform to Use?

Start from your customer and your goal, not the biggest number. A platform with fewer users but the right audience will outperform a larger one where your buyers rarely look. Most Malaysian brands get more from running two or three platforms well than from spreading thin across six.

  • Discovery among younger consumers: TikTok, backed by Instagram Reels
  • Broad adult reach and lead forms: Facebook
  • Conversations and closing sales: WhatsApp, fed by Meta ads
  • Business decision-makers: LinkedIn
  • Chinese-speaking audiences: Xiaohongshu alongside Facebook

Frequently Asked Questions About Social Media Use in Malaysia

1. Is TikTok bigger than Facebook in Malaysia?

On advertising reach, yes: 30.7 million against 23.0 million in late 2025. The gap is notable because TikTok’s figure only counts users aged 18 and over, while Facebook’s includes users from 13. Neither number is a headcount, though, so treat the comparison as a guide to reach rather than proof of more people.

It depends on the report. GWI’s survey includes WhatsApp in its social platform list, which is why it ranks first there. DataReportal’s ad-reach rankings leave it out because there is no comparable advertising audience figure. For planning purposes, treat WhatsApp as the place where conversations from other platforms end up.

They measure different things. Ad tools count reachable accounts, surveys count what people say they use, and some reports mix both or reuse older editions. Dates matter too: DataReportal’s Digital 2026 figures describe October 2025. Always check the method and the date before comparing two sources.

Yes. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission runs the Internet Users Survey, which tracks access and platform use. Fieldwork for the Internet Users Survey 2024 ran from 1 October to 31 December 2024, surveying Malaysians aged 15 and above online and by telephone. It is the best source for official, survey-based figures.

At least once a year, before annual planning. DataReportal publishes a full country report each year plus mid-year updates, and platforms revise their ad-reach numbers every few months. A platform that looks flat in one edition can jump in the next simply because of a data correction.

Follow Your Customers, Not the Biggest Number

WhatsApp wins on daily use, TikTok on ad reach, and Facebook on adult coverage, so the most used platform is rarely the whole answer. The better question is where your own buyers spend their attention, and which two or three platforms you can run properly.

If you want a straight view of which platforms deserve your budget, book a social media platform review and MYSense will map your audience against the 2026 data.
